In many ancient cultures, the shaman, or medicine man, would wear the mask of the healing spirit and dance to drive away the evil forces that people believed caused illness. Among the Iroquois Indians. a secret society of men made and ore masks, called false faces, to change themselves into healers. The people thought that the masks were important and powerful, and treated them with great respect. They even them offerings of food and tobacco.
