LESSON 9. It's Fall
It's fall
When leaves come tumbling down
To cover(덮다) the ground with red and brown.
It's fall
When fires send sparks to the sky
And geese in a V go flying by.
This poem makes(사역동사) me think of my childhood. When I was very young, I liked the red and brown leaves on the trees. They were the color of my warm cap and Mom's roses.
But when the wind blew the leaves off the trees, I was sad. When the leaves started trembling and came tumbling down, I used to say(말하곤 했다), "Bad wind, stop blowing the leaves off the trees!" I thought that the fall was the saddest time of the year.
When I was very young, I didn't know that(접속사, 생략가능) the leaves were doing all their work in the fall. I didn't know that(접속사, 생략가능) the leaves were making food for the trees in the fall. I didn't even know that(접속사, 생략가능) there would be more leaves the next summer.
When I was a child, I did not like the smell of the burning leaves. I didn't like to see(지각동사) the sparks from the fire dancing in the air. I felt that I was losing something beautiful(beautiful something X).
But now I am more grown up Now I know that(접속사, 생략 가능) in the spring there will be more leaves. I was sad when I saw(지각동사) geese flying away. My mother said that(접속사, 생략가능) most of the birds were flying south to be warm. She also said that(접속사, 생략가능) they would be back the next spring. My father said so, too. However, I didn't really believe them. How could those birds fly so far? How could they come back again by themselves(홀로, 외로이)?
