 He was in a valley, maybe four miles long and a quarter-mile wide, with the river surging through at full torrent below. It entered at the base of vertical rock walls at one end and disappeared through a similar cut at the other. While he surveyed the scene, he bathed his ankle in the cold water. Then he tore a strip off his green T-shirt and bandaged his bleeding hand. For the next three days and nights he stayed where he had fallen, calculating his chances for rescue and shouting for help. But his voice would not carry over the thunder of the river on the rocks.
