We have had our first taste of hell. Our packs weighed about forty pounds and weren't that heavy, but walking through the dense bushes at Palmer Creek was nearly impossible. The bushes and plants were about four feet high and endless! There were thorns everywhere and even plants called stinging nettles which burned your skin for at least five minutes every time you touched them! We didn't cut the bushes, out of respect for the environment; we just walked through them.

July 18

Another hard day. The local bugs were tasting human flesh perhaps for the first time, and they seemed to enjoy the meal! Our legs looked like hamburger meat. We had cuts, blisters, stings and aching muscles. We are barely halfway through the bushes of Palmer Creek, and we now all expect to spend four days in the area instead of the three we planned. But we didn't give up and went on.
