Lamas seek wisdom through prayer and meditation. One of the ways Tibetan monks meditate is by using colored sand to create mandalas, symbolic representations of the cosmos. This is a special art form, but it's also a religious ceremony. Monks can spend years learning how to make these paintings, studying symbols and memorizing the details of different mandalas. The paintings are very complex, and the techniques used to create them take precision and patience.

   A mandala ceremony begins with a ritual that blesses the space where the monks will make the painting. They draw a circle with white chalk (mandala means "circle" in Sanskrit), and this becomes the picture's outline. Next they begin to place colored sand in the center of the circle, very carefully working their way outward.
