Lesson 7 How to Get a Great Idea

 The difference between the average person and Thomas Edison, Pablo Picasso or William Shakespeare isn't just creative capacity but the ability to develop that capacity. This can be done by encouraging creative ideas and then acting upon them. Here are some of the best ways.

Capture the idea

 A good idea is like a rabbit. It runs by so fast that sometimes you see only its ears or tail. To capture it, you must be ready. Creative people are always alert.

 In a letter to a friend in 1821, Ludwig van Beethoven described how a beautiful piece of the music came to him while sleeping in a carriage. "But when I awoke, the music flew away," he wrote, "and I could not remember any part of it." Luckily, the music came back to him another day, and he captured it in writing.

 When a good idea comes your way, write it down quickly. Not every idea will be useful, of course, but the point is to catch it first and think about it later.
